Is Plug-In Solar Safe? Here's What the Evidence Actually Shows
People ask us this a lot. And it's a fair question — when something is genuinely new to New Zealand, it makes sense to ask whether it's actually safe before plugging it into your home.
Short answer: yes. The evidence is clear, and it comes from millions of installations around the world.
Here's the longer version.
The safety case starts with the technology
Modern plug-in solar systems work through a microinverter — a small device that converts the DC electricity from the panels into AC electricity your home can use. What makes these systems fundamentally different from older inverter technology is what they're designed to do when things go wrong.
Every certified plug-in solar microinverter includes:
Anti-islanding protection. If the grid goes down, the inverter shuts off automatically. It cannot push electricity back into lines where it could pose a risk to workers or neighbours. This is the feature people ask about most, and it's mandatory in every certified system.
Automatic shutdown when unplugged. The exposed pins on the plug are not live unless the inverter has a grid signal. Unplug the cable and the current stops. There's no risk of electric shock from a disconnected lead.
Overvoltage and overcurrent protection. The system monitors itself continuously and shuts down if something isn't right.
Power output limits. Systems are designed to stay within the safe rated capacity of standard household wiring. In Germany, inverter output is capped at 800W — enough to make a meaningful dent in your power bill, not enough to stress your circuit breaker.
These aren't optional extras. They're built-in requirements of the product standards that certified systems must meet.
What the real-world numbers say
Germany is the most useful reference point because it has the longest track record and the most data. In June 2025, Germany passed one million registered plug-in solar installations — and that number had doubled in the previous 12 months alone. Across Europe, an estimated 4–5 million systems are now running.
For panels-only systems, the safety record is essentially spotless.
There was one notable fire in Lower Saxony in March 2024 — but it involved the battery storage component of a combined system, not the panels themselves. This is an important distinction. Panels-only plug-in solar and systems that include battery storage have very different risk profiles.
The United Kingdom government announced in March 2026 that it would update its grid code and wiring rules to enable plug-in solar before the end of the year. In the United States, UL Solutions launched a dedicated plug-in solar testing and certification programme (UL 3700) in early 2026, and more than a dozen US states now have active legislation to legalise these systems. Utah has already passed enabling laws unanimously. Every jurisdiction that has examined this carefully has arrived at the same conclusion.
So why isn't it legal in New Zealand yet?
Here's the thing: the reason plug-in solar isn't legal in New Zealand isn't because of a safety concern. It's a classification problem.
A prohibition notice issued in 2012 bans any inverter from connecting to the grid via a wall socket. That notice was written for cheap, unsafe devices and a DIY approach. Modern certified microinverters are a completely different technology — but the rules haven't been updated to reflect that.
The Ministry for Regulation launched a formal review of residential solar installation in May 2026, explicitly including plug-in systems. The goal David Seymour has set is to make New Zealand the simplest place in the developed world to install solar. That review is active now.
We've been part of this conversation for over a year — talking to WorkSafe, Standards NZ, and now the Ministry. The safety case is already made. What New Zealand needs is for the administrative classification to catch up with the technology.
